The IACR – Centre for Aquatic Plant Management – UK has undertaken extensive research into algae control and found that Barley straw ‘offers a cheap, environmentally acceptable way of controlling algae in water bodies ranging in size from garden ponds to large reservoirs, streams, rivers and lakes’.
Barley straw prevents new growth of most unicellular, filamentous algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green) algae.

How it works
As Barley straw decays in oxygenated water, it releases natural chemicals which inhibit the growth of new algae.
Barley straw tends to become active in 2 weeks and effective in 4-5 weeks for water temperatures above 20 degrees C. At temperatures below 10 degrees C Barley straw becomes active in 6 weeks and effective within 8-10 weeks.
Barley straw remains an effective algae preventative for up to 6 months whilst the straw completely decays.
